Steam Packet Vessel Monas Queen Anchor raised

1st June, 2010

THE anchor of a Steam Packet vessel sunk by the Nazis at Dunkirk was raised from the seabed on the 70th anniversary of the evacuation.

Mona's Queen's anchor is being brought back to the Isle of Man to become a lasting memorial to the heroic role played by no fewer than eight Steam Packet ships in saving almost 25,000 British servicemen from the beach – that's one in 14 of the troops who were landed back in England.

A suitable prominent site for the anchor is now being sought on the Island.
