Port of Heysham silting up

16th January, 2012

Peel Ports, the owners of Heysham Port, is seeking contractors for the dredging project at the harbour.

Plans were revealed which include dredging some 36,000 cubic metres of silt from the harbour and dumping of the dredged silt at sea.

The Company said “Recent surveys of the harbour indicated that levels of silt adjacent to the North Quay have built up and compromise vessel access and that dredging is required to improve the berth availability.”

Heysham Port is the used by many Irish Sea ferries and the Isle of Man Steam Packet as well as by a diverse range of general cargo services and the offshore gas supply industry.

Located on the Lancashire coast on the south of Morecambe Bay, Heysham is close to the UK’s main West Coast M6 motorway and has provided year round services for the Isle of Man's ferry route.
