Government proclaim "Buy Local" fiasco

22nd November, 2009

Isle of Man Local hauliers have protested against the use of off-island contractors used on the Ronaldsway Airport Runway Extension Scheme. It was considered that the some of the work could have been done by local hauliers at a better rate than shipping trucks and drivers from the adjacent Island. Not only that, some of the UK registered trucks used were found unroadworthy on return to the UK and were stopped from proceeding back to Norfolk by the Police.

Dept of Transport Minister, David Anderson, initially denied that any of the vehicles were unroadworthy and questions are now being asked in the House of Keys about this unsatisfactory situation.

Both Chief Minister, Tony Brown and Treasury Minister, Allan Bell have both been proclaiming the virtues of "Buying Local" whilst Government Departments allow non Manx companies to carry out work which could have been competently carried out by local businesses. A case of "Do as I say - not as I do!"
