Geordies win Eric Fletcher Charity Shield

11th August, 2014

St George's got their 2014-15 campaign off to a trophy-winning start by clinching the Eric Fletcher Charity Shield in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at the Bowl on Friday, but only after a stunning late comeback from St Mary's.

A goal early in the second half by Calum Morrissey and a late Chris Bass Jr strike appeared to put Geordies on course to lift the trophy.

However, Mark Wolfenden fired a shot in off the post in the 90th minute on his debut to set up a nervy finale before strike partner Steven Priestnal curled home a brilliant shot from range right at the death to force a shootout.

Despite the setback, Chris Bass Sr's Glencrutchery Road side held their nerve and converted all their penalties to lift the trophy.
