Defective vehicles used on runway extension

19th November, 2009

A recent controversial story regarding the use of UK based haulage contractors being employed on the Ronaldsway Airport Extension Scheme when local hauliers were ignored, has come to a head with news that certain of the vehicles used on the high profile capital project were found to have defects, making them unroadworthy in the United Kingdom.

Two of eight vehicles contracted by Billown-based Colas for work on the airport runway extension had to be carried back to their Norwich depot on lowloaders, after police in Lancashire found problems with their brakes on arrival and checking at Heysham Port.

The outside contractors were employed despite the IOM Government promoting a "Buy Local" campaign.
