Commercial Vehicle Operators Licences to be introduced to the Isle of Man.
27th April, 2009
The Isle of Man Department of Transport is soon to introduce Operators Licences for Commercial Goods Vehicle Operators. This follows on from the tragic death of a young cyclist near Ballacraine.
Hauliers and other users of Large Goods Vehicles have been consulted by the Department and a draft proposal is soon to be out before Tynwald. The scheme does not mirror that of the UK but is broadly based on similar legislation. It will lay down specific maintenance intervals and will also require the Haulier / Operator to be of good repute and have sound financial resources as well as requiring that all Commercially used vehicles encompassed within the scheme are subject to annual testing. The consultation has met with resistance from some operators, but ultimately can only be of benefit to the Industry and of course other road users.
