Ash cloud halts Northern European air cargo
19th April, 2010
Following the ongoing closure of European Airspace, the obvious reaction is to use other modes of transport such as Rail, Road and Sea. Air freight for traffic within Europe is not essential as it is often just as quick to move goods by road.
The main problem is related to inter-continental traffic. In order to deal with this there are some indications that freight forwarders and airlines are considering setting-up freight hubs in airports in Spain which has so far been unaffected. UPS is reported to already be flying some freight to Istanbul and moving it into Europe by road.
